Maintaining oral health is equally important for dogs as it is for humans.
Dental disease is probably the most common and undertreated disease we see at our hospital. Dental pain can be underestimated since the disease usually progresses slowly, without your dog showing you that he/she is uncomfortable. Regular dental cleanings and home care (like a special dental diet) can help keep your dog’s teeth healthy and pain-free!
Our dental care services include routine scaling and polishing of the teeth, performing dental radiographs to identify problems under the gum line and extraction of diseased or broken teeth as required. These procedures are all done under a general anesthetic in order to allow us to properly examine the mouth and perform any necessary treatments.
Ideally every day! We know that brushing less than 3 times a week is not effective so making it a daily habit is the best option for your dog.
Dental disease can be very painful for your pet. Imagine experiencing a loose or broken tooth causing pain every time you eat. It can also affect other parts of your dog’s body. Are you aware that the large numbers of bacteria in a diseased mouth can predispose a dog to infections in other areas like the heart? A nice clean and odour free mouth also mean more snuggling with your best friend!
